Australia–Taiwan Joint PhD Scholarship 2027: Lung Cancer Treatment Research

A PhD researcher will have the chance to work across Australia and Taiwan on a proposed inhaled treatment for lung cancer. Macquarie University and National Tsing Hua University are offering a jointly funded place for a project that combines engineering, medical research and computational modelling.

What will the researcher do?
The project will investigate how a treatment agent can be delivered into the lungs and targeted at tumours using boron neutron capture therapy. The work involves modelling and laboratory experiments; the universities say animal models may also be used where appropriate. This is a research project, not an announcement of an available cancer treatment.

Who should consider applying?
The universities favour applicants with a background in biomedical or chemical engineering, medical physics, or a related field. Mechanical engineering graduates interested in learning tissue and animal research may also be considered. Experience in computational modelling, aerosol science, respiratory biomechanics or laboratory work would strengthen an application. Candidates must meet the PhD admission and scholarship requirements of both universities.

What funding is offered?
The package includes tuition scholarships at both institutions. Macquarie lists a stipend of AUD 39,700 per year at the 2026 rate, paid proportionally while the student is on its campus, plus a Taiwan–Sydney airfare allowance of up to AUD 4,000 under its travel rules. The NTHU stipend depends on which university is the student’s home institution. Applicants should check those conditions before treating the quoted Australian stipend as income for the entire PhD.

How to express interest
Email an expression of interest to both supervisors by Sunday, 31 January 2027. The requested documents include a CV, relevant transcripts, details of the thesis component of a previous degree, and a statement of suitability of no more than 500 words. Applicants must also address the English language requirements. The preferred candidate will subsequently be invited to make formal applications to both universities.
