MEXT Scholarship for Nepali Students: Choose the Right Application Route
The Japanese Government’s MEXT scholarship has different study categories and application routes. Learn where Nepali applicants should check official instructions before preparing documents.
Interested in studying in Japan with a Japanese Government scholarship? The MEXT scholarship covers several types of study, but the correct application process depends on your study category and recommendation route. Start by identifying those two things before collecting forms or preparing a research proposal.
Current application status: The Embassy of Japan in Nepal marks its listed 2027 embassy-recommendation applications as closed. This guide explains how to prepare for a future announcement; it is not an invitation to apply to that closed round.
First, choose your study category
The Embassy of Japan in Nepal’s MEXT page lists separate information for postgraduate/research students, undergraduate students and specialised training college students. Teacher training is also listed separately.
Do not use one category’s age, education or document requirements for another. Open the category that matches the study you want to pursue and read its own application guidelines.
Then, identify the application route
According to the official Study in Japan MEXT guidance, applicants may pursue embassy recommendation or university recommendation. These are different processes:
- Embassy recommendation: Follow the current announcement and instructions from the Japanese embassy in your country.
- University recommendation: Check the Japanese university’s own scholarship and admissions instructions.
A university page describing its recommendation process does not replace the Embassy of Japan in Nepal’s instructions for an embassy-recommendation application.
Prepare a document checklist from the current guidelines
When a new round is announced, download the guidelines for that year and category. Make a checklist of eligibility, forms, academic records, recommendations, any required study or research plan, submission method and deadline. The official Study in Japan application page also directs applicants to read the applicable guidelines and follow embassy submission instructions for embassy recommendation.
Keep a note of where each requirement came from. This helps you catch differences between an old downloadable form and the current call.
Where should a Nepali applicant check first?
Bookmark the Embassy of Japan in Nepal’s scholarship page. For an embassy-recommendation application, use its latest announcement for the category you want. For university recommendation, check the official website of the Japanese university concerned.
Muglan+ tip: Make a small tracker with four columns-study category, recommendation route, official page and next action. Update it when a new call appears. A social-media post can alert you to an opportunity, but the current official guidelines should determine what you submit.
