Interested in an Engineering PhD at Cambridge with funding? The University of Cambridge lists 8 December 2026 as the course funding deadline for its PhD in Engineering. Applications opened on 9 September 2026 for the listed 2027 entry periods.

This is the deadline to be considered in the course funding competition. It is not a promise of funding, and it is earlier than the course’s general admission deadline. If funding is essential to your plan, prepare for the earlier date.

Who should examine this opportunity?

Cambridge says applicants should have the equivalent of a Good II.i Honours Degree. Most successful applicants have studied engineering, natural sciences or a related field such as computer science or mathematics. Some research groups may consider other backgrounds when the proposed research is a strong fit.

If your degree is from Nepal or another country outside the UK, check Cambridge’s international qualification guidance rather than assuming that a percentage converts directly to a UK classification. Review the course’s academic and English-language requirements as well.

Step 1: Find a research fit

Browse the Department of Engineering’s research groups and identify a topic that matches your preparation. You must name at least one proposed supervisor in the application and include a statement of research interests. Cambridge says applications missing either of these will be rejected.

You are not required to contact a supervisor before submitting, though the course page says you may contact one to discuss research fit or capacity. Name someone whose work genuinely connects to your proposed project.

Step 2: Prepare the application materials

According to the course page, you should prepare your transcript, CV, two referees and evidence of English competence if required. The application also asks for a proposed supervisor and short sections on your research interests, reasons for applying and research experience.

If you want consideration for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, the course page lists an additional Gates Cambridge reference and a research proposal for PhD applicants. Read those requirements while planning your application; do not leave your referees’ work until the final day.

Step 3: Submit a complete application before the funding deadline

Use Apply Now on the official course application page. Cambridge says an application is complete only when the form and supporting documents have been submitted, any applicable fee has been paid, and referees have submitted their references.

Treat 8 December 2026 as a complete-application deadline for funding preparation. Check the portal and course page for the applicable closing time and any updated instructions. The course also warns that places in some research areas can fill before the advertised general admission deadline.

Muglan+ action checklist: Identify a research group → check academic and language requirements → name a proposed supervisor → prepare the research statements → brief both referees → complete the official application ahead of the funding deadline.
